Moodle 3: Activities & Resources: Quiz Timing Settings

Quiz Timing Settings

Instructors can customize the Quiz Timing Settings to make the quiz available for a specific time period, give students a time limit, and tell Moodle how to handle quizzes that are in progress when time expires.

The Open and Close dates must be enabled before changes can be made. Set the date and time, but note that Moodle uses a 24-hour time system. For example, if a quiz is set to close at 8:00 PM, instructors will need to enter 20:00 as the close time.

The Time limit, if enabled, gives students a specific amount of time to complete the quiz once they begin their attempt. The time limit can be in seconds, minutes, hours, days, or weeks.

When time expires, instructors have three options to handle open attempts:

  • Open attempts are submitted automatically
  • There is a grace period when open attempts can be submitted, but no more questions answered
  • Attempts must be submitted before time expires, or they are not counted (student would receive a 0)

If instructors select the grace period option, they should check the 'Submission grace period' box and specify a period of time during which students can still submit the quiz.
