PLEASE NOTE:  If you would like to save any content from courses that are older than 18 months, you have several options. The first option is to download and save the content to your own computer. The second option is to import the content into a Blueprint Course in Moodle. For each course you teach, you can get a single Blueprint Course created. Instructors can use a Blueprint Course to create and store content for a course to be taught in a future semester. Students do not get enrolled in Blueprint Courses. For instructions on how to request a Blueprint Course, please visit GROK 20175: Request a Blueprint Course.

Below you will find answers to the most commonly asked questions about Moodle.

All Users

How can I change or remove my Moodle Profile photo?

User profile photos can now be removed or replaced. When a user profile is first created, Moodle attempts to retrieve the user's photo from the LSU TigerCard system. If your photo is not transferred or if you wish to change or remove it, see GROK 20484, Moodle: Edit User Picture.

How do I change my preferred name?

Any display name changes must be made through Workday. To learn more about this, please see GROK 17046, LSUMail: Update Display Name (via Workday). Last names or official names on record must be changed with the Office of the University Registrar at the Registrar's Name & SSN Changes webpage. After this process is completed, your updated name will be reflected in Moodle the next time you are enrolled in a course through Workday Student. Please note that this does not include courses with manual enrollments, such as training or Community Moodle courses.

How do I change my Moodle password?

Your Moodle password is the same as your myLSU password, and you can manage your password through the Identity and Access Management (IAM) Portal. Please see GROK 14285, Account: MyLSU Password Management for more information.

Student FAQs

How do I view my Moodle courses?

Once you have logged in to Moodle, click on My Courses in the pager header to see the course cards for all courses available to you. If you cannot find a course, make sure you have all filters turned off. For more information on filters, see GROK 20167, Moodle: Home Page, Sidebar, and My Courses.

It is before the start of the term. Why can’t I find my Moodle Courses?

You will be enrolled in your Moodle courses for the upcoming term approximately 14 days prior to the first day of class. If you do not see a course you are enrolled in, your instructor may still be working on the Moodle course content and have the course hidden. Please check Moodle closer to the first day of the term to view the course or check your enrollments in Workday Student.

Classes have started, why can’t I find a course in Moodle that I just added?

After adding a course in Workday Student, you will be added to the course in Moodle within one hour. Please wait at least one hour or contact the primary instructor of the course to have them manually reprocess the enrollment.

Why do I still see a course in Moodle that I have dropped?

After dropping a course, you will be removed from the course in Moodle within one hour. Please check later in the day after your drop is processed to ensure you have been unenrolled from the course.

Why can’t I find the Moodle courses I was just taking?

Courses are hidden from students about one week after final grades are submitted. If you are granted an extension, your instructor can make the course visible again. Contact your instructor if the course is not visible.

Why do I still see a Moodle course from a previous term?

Courses are hidden from students about one week after final grades are submitted. Sometimes there is a delay in hiding courses. Other times an instructor has made a course visible for another student to complete their work for an extension.

How can I hide courses I don’t need?

Users can remove unwanted courses from view on the My Courses page. To learn more about this, see GROK 20167, Homepage, Sidebar, and My Courses Page.

Why does my grade in Moodle not look correct?

Please review your syllabus and contact your instructor about your course grade. Some instructors choose not to use Moodle’s gradebook, may use it in a different way than other instructors, or there may be a delay in grading. Again, your course syllabus should be your primary grading reference and all grade questions should first be directed to your instructor.

Faculty FAQs

Why can't I see my current Moodle courses?

If you are assigned as the instructor of record in Workday Student, your Moodle courses will be created 30 days prior to the first day of class by default. Instructors can extend this timeframe to a maximum of 60 days. For more information, please see GROK 20171, Moodle: Course Preferences.

Why can’t enrolled students find my current Moodle course?

The Visibility setting in your Moodle course settings determines whether or not the students enrolled in the course can see it on their My Courses page. The default setting is "Hide" at the time of course creation. When the course is ready for students, you must change this setting to "Show." For more information, please see GROK 19861, Moodle: Course Visibility.

Why can’t my student with an extension see my Moodle course?

About one week after final grades are due, Moodle courses from the previous term are automatically hidden. This removes student access to the course and removes it from view on the My Courses page. Instructors can make courses visible again in the course settings area, if necessary. It is strongly recommended that courses are hidden again after all course business has concluded. For more information, please see GROK 19861, Moodle: Course Visibility.

Why can’t I find the Moodle Courses I was just teaching?

About one week after final grades are due, Moodle courses from the previous term are automatically hidden. On the My Courses page, these courses will now have a blue label designating them as "Hidden from students." Depending on your My Courses filters, this may move the course card in your display. If you have previously starred a course, it will remain starred even after it is hidden.

Why does it take so long to load or backup my course?

The overall size and the types of files in your course may slow your backup or loading time. The course limit for backup and restore is 500 MB. You can check your course size in the Course File Size meter at the top left of course front page. For information on the meter and strategies for course size management, see GROK 20586, Moodle: Course File Size Tool.
